Position:Home>Philosophy> What do you think of my theory?

Question:I was just thinking to myself and came up with this idea about the meaning of life. I'm not saying it IS, but I'm saying it's sortof MY meaning of life. Here we go:

The meaning of life is unknown.

Meaning, the meaning of life is to discover the unknown.

There would be no meaning at all to life if we knew everything. Sure we could do things, but we wouldn't really have any creative thoughts, if we already knew everything.
What interests people is things they don't know. If you're interested in something, you ask questions about it, even if you dont voice them aloud you still wonder.

For example;
If you find a person interesting, you ask them about their life, or about their opinions. Or atleast you wonder about their life and opinions etc.

All this time people say, "No one knows the meaning of life".
I think that's because the meaning of life is what we don't know.

Did that make any sense?
What do you think?

love this subject, and you will find that your theory changes with ages, back and forth, the meaning of life changes with your experience. for instance when you have a baby it puts a whole new perspective on things. i think you put it right about constant learning. we are here to learn about ourselves and others. i believe we are here for a purpose, only God knows, so we go along thru thick and thin along the path He designed for us. it is certainly an adventure and sometimes difficult. but all for a meaning we find out when we go to the afterlife. well, that is just a thought of mine.
thanks for the interesting question! it put me up to level 2!

Makes perfect sense to me. I believe something similar.

Interesting theory. I agree with you. If we knew everything, then it would be boring.

Meaning in life is not only knowledge but experience as well. You can have all the knowledge possible about the Grand Canyon and yet never fulfill seeing it with your own eyes. You can know all about base-line jumping yet never take a leap. It impossible to have true understanding of everything without experience. I like the idea, but I would have to disagree.

Hmmmm...
Well, I think life has a nature rather than a meaning.
I.e. To collect energy, to reproduce, to aviod being eaten.

Of course to this end, we have evolved to be problem solving machines.

Which means we are always trying to discover what we don't know.

So one COULD say the nature of the human mind is to discover the unknown.

From my point of view as a Christian who doesn't know all the answers, and is constantly striving to be creative in my writing and poetry, I really like what you said. Not only does it apply to every day life but also to study and work, getting along with others and perhaps courting, marriage and child rearing. Personally, I think it also applies to Heaven. There, there will be so much about God that we can never understand, but we can try every moment. It is a quest that will take forever and we have forever with God in Heaven.

I'm pretty sure that when anyone says "meaning of life" what they really mean is "purpose."
So ask yourself the same question but replace "meaning" with "purpose."

The next step is - when ever you answer that question ask it again like this.

Q: What is the purpose of life?
A: Discovering the unknown.
Q: What is the purpose of discovering the unknown?
A: To satisfy my personal interests.
Q: What is the purpose of satisfying my personal interests?
and so on, and so on, and so on . . .

Keep doing this until you can not come up with an answer. What you will discover is called an end. Once that happens you should have your answer. I think it's great that you have a natural curiosity like that but what you have discovered is not an "end" - because you can still answer the question "why" or "for what purpose" find an end and you will discover the purpose of you life (at least for now) I think most people will discover that the meaning of life is actually about finding ways to minimize our own personal suffering.

In many ways, your theory is merely a restating of the Uncertainty Reduction theory by Charles Berger.

Oh how refreshing it would be it a few more Questioners would read philosophy before they disseminate their own "theories."

Then, they would not look so uneducated in the field they have chosen to speak in.

I think you are getting closer to asking that question to the right person..... Yourself!

Just the fact that you are asking question like that ...is an indication that your are on the right path...learn to think outside the box

wtf
