Position:Home>Philosophy> Why do people read Philosophy?

Question:My first was Atlas Shrugged--because my HS english teacher would give me 10 points for it. I picked it after reading Alvin Toffler's interview with her in Playboy.

After that I was hooked. I read her other fiction, then started reading non-fiction. I think I started with Edmund Husserl's "Phenomenology of Internal Time Consciousness." That was hard.

Then somewhere in there I taught myself Logic, but that is not like riding a bike. I must constantly look at my notes when I write about it.

It's addictive.

We suppose ourselves to possess unqualified scientific knowledge of a thing, as opposed to knowing it in the accidental way in which the sophist knows, when we think that we know the cause on which the fact depends, as the cause of that fact and of no other, and, further, that the fact could not be other than it is. Now that scientific knowing is something of this sort is evident — witness both those who falsely claim it and those who actually possess it, since the former merely imagine themselves to be, while the latter are also actually, in the condition described. Consequently the proper object of unqualified scientific knowledge is something which cannot be other than it is.

my husband asks me the same question...why do i waste my and our time???
i dont know, its my interest. just like he wont change the channel from goltv for two seconds.
i've been reading philosophy throughout my 20's to find out where i fit in in this vast universe. to see if i can understand what others have said about what the whole absurd point of our existence might be. and to understand why some people think the way they do. reading philosophy has brought me some amazing highs as well as into some deep deep depressions. its just my form of entertainment, that's pretty much it.
