Position:Home>Philosophy> Why are some animals designated as pets and others designated as food?

Question:Its due only to the tradition, which came from the animal's historical relationship to man. Dogs were domesticated by man as companions, for example.

Its really irrational though. Both "pet" animals like dogs and cats, and "food" animals like cows and pigs can feel pain, joy, happiness, and fear.

Some are cute and some are tasty

I think the larger ones are food, and the smaller one which do not have enough meat become pets

Uh, I think they call it a food chain. Everything has to consume something else to survive. Even single celled organisms have to survive.

Because cows really can't sit on our lap and purr... and we can't really take them for a walk on a sunny ol' day.

That's a pretty interesting question, but in some countries like Vietnam I believe they eat dogs. And then in some countries such as India, they believe that cows are sacred. I honestly believe that it all has to do with culture and society. I mean, if you grow up learning that eating pig is normal, then you will not be so weirded out by eating it.

So....where in your house do you keep your cows, pigs, and chickens?

carnivores are pets, because humans are carnivores. herbivores are food.

    Theres a designation?

Really - why can't we designate that barking all night dog that lives next to me as food? Or certain people I know -

    Good question.

Tigers have been reared and cannibals are also there.

I think the distinction between animals for domestication and food is less logical and more traditional or historical. The truth is that when absolutely unavoidable, man would eat anything and also has the capability to control any animal for other uses as well....... and man is no saint to refrain from either merely on any compassionate grounds.

I guess its our culture, starting way back when. Any animal that we eat could easily be a pet but we have made it that certain ones are good to eat and others are immoral to eat. Some are made to cuddle with and others are made to kill. Look at other countries, cats and dogs are food, they arent here. Cows are sacred in other countries and here we love to eat them.
