Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: In other words, what are people really asking when they pose that question?

No answers with the number 42 in them please.

really such a question does not exist, since posing such a question infers that they cannot comprehend the ambiguity of such a proposal.

However, usually when I hear people ask that... I just think of them as individuals who need some truth to validate their existance. They seek, but will never find, since they don't really know what they are looking for. So they ask that question, which has many many answers, and none of them true, in the hope that some rare individual will illuminate their path. Of course this never happens, and they probably end up joining a cult, or smoking more weed.

Why? no really no! I mean... Why?

Is there meaning in life?

What purpose should I assign to my existence.

They're asking, "Why am I here rather than not? Who am I? Am I? What should I be doing?"

Did you want someone to ask: How could I best live a meaning?

No answer with 42? Come now, that is just not very nice...

?? well....if i ask you -- are you happy,Sir,so maybe you can feel it how meaningful this Life!

why do we exist? what are we here for? how did we come to be? what if we were different? why aren't we?

those are some questions that mean "what is the meaning of life?" to me =]

What is my purpose? Why am I here? Our lives are finite and yet that doesn't seem right. There has to be more than just eating, working, sleeping and doing it all over again. Why aren't we like the animals, blissfully unaware? Why are we given the burden of awareness? Why do we think of it as something that is given to us?
What are we and what is our purpose in this fleeting life?

Is the meaning of life societies or mine ?

What are people really asking when they pose that question?

They are actually asking
"I have no idea what to do with my life. Please advise."
