sure they do. or rather did but now they have the answers so do not ponder much. They are the enlightened. They have even trained us to think they are cute or regal or funny

I believe animals are all knowing. Why else would we worship them so? Everything we know we learned from them.

You may think this answer is humorous but I am deadly serious.
We have been worshipping animals since the beginning of time. The raven, the jaguar, the Sphinx, the lion, the turtle, the , the, the, etc. Poseidon was a horse. Then there is the serpent... Huge, huge corporations are dedicated to the animal. We study them trying to learn their secrets.

Oh yes! your cat, who has nine lives has pondered life and figured out how to manipulate you and become the master of your house, pays no rent, does no chores, and eats your food, sleeps in your bed, threatens your disbelieving friends. .

no, animals don't really posses higher leveling processing skills necessary for understanding of self.

NO. I don't think cats, or most animals, have the brain complexity to understand time; that is, future. Without a future there is no meaning besides the now. In the now there is no meaning, just the now. I hate to sound like some new-age, yoga-doing, tree-hugger, but that's my answer. I tried to take it semi-seriously.

My stuffed cat on my laptap appears lost in thought all the time. I asked it just now this very question and he didn't want to give up his life to answer me. Poor thing. It's so nice and white and has really beautiful blue eyes. It has a cam on top of it. Now that I think about it I do believe that is its third eye! Wow.. so for my cat, of course I can't speak for all cats, but at least for mine. Of course it does. I know so and I don't care how conceited it is not to answer my simple question.

As for your cat. I am afraid I do not know it al all.

Yep, why do they look at you quizzically?
You think they think you are just their benefactor?
That may be equivalent of saying, dear politician, professor priest; What is going on here, and why haven't you taken care of me?
All living things were created to live. I have serious doubts as to the belief that human beings were the only physical things that have the gift of life, much less redemption.
It gives too much credence to those"reasoning" life forms that use their so called ability to reason to exterminate those that little agree with them.

Cats don't have the gift of rationality, so no. They know good and bad, so he/she knows if they are enjoying life. Just make sure you help him/her to enjoy it. I lost my cat years ago, and his picture makes me cry still to this day.

Why not?

no , this is what makes animals beautiful.. they live in the moment...my cat is purring and pawing my leg right now and thats all he cares about...

No it already knows the meaning of life and such. it's waiting for you to figure it out.

Ask a semi serious question get a semi serious answer.

I think it is foolish to dismiss animals as unthinking. it is also foolish to assume that animals have no sense of self. if they had no sense of self then why would they bother trying to stay alive? it's like the french philopher said, "i think therefore i am." well does saying that then mean that those who don't think are not?

Mine certainly does.
