They make it hurt less when you play!. When you begin playing, your fingers are soft and delicate!. Pushing them against those hard strings can hurt, so callouses form to help that!. They should only form on the tips of your fingers mainly on your left hand(and maybe on the side of one finger if you play a lot of bar chords) and they're really not that noticeable once you get used to them!. They kind of peel off if you don't play for a while!. Personally, I don't like it when they wear off (mine have now and I miss them)!. If you really don't like them, try using nylon strings!. You'll still get small ones, but they won't be as hard as the ones that will develop from steel strings!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I am addressing only the callouses!.
They develop to protect your fingers from damage!. It takes time for them to develop!. They will eventually wear a way if they are not needed!. They are small and only cover the area of the fingers where they came in contact with the strings!. They are normally invisible to the untrained eye!.
If you are concerned about the finger pain when learning to play, Try spraying your finger tips with a coat of hairs spray and then let it dry before practicing!. This becomes an artificial layer of skin that will help protect the skin!. Do not play long periods without resting 30 minutes or more!. I suggest 15 minutes of playing then 30 minutes off!. As you develop you can add more time to your playing!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

smart choice, i am a guitarist as well!. they are not permanent, i took a break so i could focus on sports and school, and practiced weekly instead of daily and they went away so if you stop playing for a while, they will go!. just a warning, the initial callouses will be painful i will tell you now, when they are fully calloused the pain goes away!. yes they help A TON!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Callouses are formed when the skin is constantly rubbing against something (often found on feet because of this)!.

Callouses aren't permanent, but they won't go away unless you scrape them off!.

They do help in guitar playing as they act as a "shield" and reduce the pain from picking!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think that callouses can end up permanent if you continue to play alot, but they do not usually remain visible, your fingertips just develop skin that is a little bit thicker!. I think that the harder skin on your fingers keeps them from getting sore if you play for a while at a time!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

idk if ur asking abut left or right hand!. i hve some pretty nice callouse(!?!?) on my left but none on my right (i use a pick) and if i use moisturizing soap or just get my fingers wet they go away pretty fast!. they really help tho IMO!.

steel strings will give u more of a twangy sharp sound and nylon will give you are more dull sound but nylons stay in tune longerWww@QuestionHome@Com

A very informative website, you can also get much information in website!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

you need them it will hurt until they Develop
dearer the guitar less thick the callouses
stop playing the guitar and they will go away

the callouses are a GOOD thingWww@QuestionHome@Com

Thick calluses are crucial to extended guitar playing!. They must not be ragged either because they can snag another string or ruin a fine piece of clothing!.

But calluses (notice the correct spelling) will go away when playing less and less!. As another poster said, the initial set of calluses give more pain in their developing while rebuilding them may not be too painful!.

So don't become calloused over building up your calluses!. They are a part of a string player!.

Added note: Go to a steel-string guitar if you want Country!. Conversely, Willie Nelson always uses nylon strings on his beat-up Martin, so the rule is flexible!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
