Question: I'm a trombone player, And i want to switch to french horn!?
I'm a trombone player!. Our band teacher is letting the brass switch to French horn if we want to, but we must try out, and while in class instead of playing with the class we will go in the back room with a man and learn how to play!. Me and my friend are deciding if we want to!. We both play trombone, so the smaller mouth piece will be harder to get used to!. Switching from Bass clef and Treble clef, will also be hard, and finally fingerings, Anything else that will be hard!? Do you think i should switch, or stay with trombone!? Any other info!? Thanks alot!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well I'm in my 10th year of Highschool and I play the trombone!. I strongly encourage you to stick with it!. It may not be the easiest instrument and you all may not be the most advanced at it but why quit now!? I mean low brass is so much fun!. You can get really good at it if you guys give it a chance!. You already learned the bass clef and your postitions!. Why quit now!?

Luckily I have a very kind director!. But just because your band director is mean doesnt mean he hates the trombones!. He just expects more from you because there are probably so many of you!. Him or her being strict and sometimes rude doesnt mean he hates you, it means he believes in you all and that he thinks you all can do better!. Your director is trying to make you all better instrumentalists, and music does prepare you for life, everyone believes this in my band!. The director probably sees potential in the trombone line but to advance in your instrument you have to learn, even if you are yelled at!. We are yelled at too for things in my band, but so are the rest of the band for other things!.

Being a trombone player is amazing!. I hated this instrument when I was younger, so I suppose I was in the same prediciment as you are, I wanted to change my instrument!. But I stuck with it and I love it now!. Low brass is amazing, you can have harmony for the longest time but you can also get the melody!. Its very diverse!.

(This going to the girl above my answer) :
1!. also who cares if it is hard to get through the bus isle!? Its only a bus!. Lol!. I mean I deal with it too!. I play bass bone in District Band, which is heavier and bulkier than the average trombone (the bell being twice the size of my regular trombone bell) Lol!. But I honestly do know where your coming from, lugging around a huge trombone does suck most of the time!. Lol!.
2!. And a good, long lasting trombone costs the same amount of money as a trombone, if not sometimes more, depending on the brand!. (Or perhaps less as well)!. Instruments arent cheap, any instrument is going to be pretty expensive depending on your brand!.

Ultimitaly, the choice is yours!. So good luck in whatever you choose, whether that be you choosing to stay with trombone or switching to french horn!.

Good Luck, and I hope I helped!. :)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Wow, that is a tough one!. A trombone is not easy to play, and to reach any decent level of proficiency takes a lot of practice!. A French horn is more difficult than a cornet or a trumpet, to get a decent sound, so the climb to a decent level of proficiency is also not a waltz in the park!. Why not get good at what you got!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'm also in the same band, same instrument!. Our trombones are heavy and to bulky to get through the bus isle!. We could over come challenges like that, and no more band teacher, that's good to!. And we don't have to rent the french horns, because it's schools, a french horn is normally about 2000$!. Our band teacher is mean, and is always yelling at the trombones!. We aren't that advanced yet, and we don't march!. So for any other answers take these into consideration!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

This is my friend and I'm in the same band as her!. The reason we want to switch so bad is that our band director is so mean! We all hate her and she makes us play non-stop all day, the only breaks we get is when she stops to yell at us!. I personally hate my trombone and think it might be a little fun to switch to french horn!. also, the french horns, since we have no experience on them, go to the back room to get taught the basics of the instrument!. We are taught by another director, so that means no more evil band teacher!. Yay!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think you should switch to French Horn!. There are never many French Horns in a band, and it helps to have them!. Its kinda hard to switch clefs, but not to bad!. And it's not too hard to change mouthpieces!. And just get a fingering chart for it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I would suggest that you stay with the trombone!.

Mostly because the Horn is incredibly difficult to play after switching from an instrument that hardly use combinations of valves with slide (such as a F attachment trigger trombone)!. Another very difficult thing about playing the horn is that you have to have crazy good relative pitch (having a pitch in your head before you play/sing) in order to proficient at all!. If you don't have a good relative pitch you'll be fishing for a note for ages, which never sounds good :)!. also if you'll be playing primarily in a wind band environment you will probably play a LOT of marches which the clandestine thing that horn players ALWAYS have to put up with are off beats, those are never fun!. And the only time the horn really melody in Orchestral music is in a piece that is most likely too difficult for an educational ensemble!. Here I'm referring to pieces by Gustav Mahler who uses the horn in his music incredibly often!. The downfall, however is that his music is far so difficult that many Professional Symphony Orchestras can't even play his music!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Stay with trombone!.
The trombone can be a beautiful instrument, and as my band director says, is the most beautiful instrument in the band!. But it can also be loud and rowdy at pep rallies and games and such, as it's also the LOUDEST instrument in the band!. :) Ask your band instructor if you can play the Pavane, Op!. 50 by Gabriel Faure, arranged by Larry Clark!. It has a really beautiful trombone solo at measure 70 that makes me insanely happy every time I hear it!. The Pavane is the most wonderful song I've ever played!.

Here's a reason NOT to switch to French Horn!. French Horns never get the melody!. They're always the background music, whereas the trombone is the star of the show!. Why would you trade your trombone in for an instrument that hardly ever gets a solo!? And why would you want to have to adjust to a new mouthpiece, learn new fingerings and all of that for a new instrument when your current one is better!?

It is your decision after all!. But I have a feeling you would regret switching if you actually do!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
