Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
standard tuning is EADGBE
this is used for a lot of popular rock/pop/many other genres!.

some other punk, metal or hard rock has drop d tuning
which is DADGBE

then there is drop C tuning, for heavy metal kinda stuff
with is CADGBE

do get to drop d, you just tune the first string (the E string - fattest one) down one step (note) from E to D

you can go half steps to half a sharp or flat as the strings tuning!.

you can use a chromatic, or any type of guitar tuner from places like guitar center, or even walmart!.

you can also use a piano if you dont have anything!.

Well, there's what's called standard tuning in E!. That means that the strings are (from thickest to thinnest) EADGBE!. You could have a guitar tuned to standard tuning 1 step down: DGCFAD!. You can have a "dropped D" tuning which is DADGBE!. Then you can tune your guitar to open chords, so that when you strum your guitar without fretting it (all open strings) then it'll play a chord!. For example, DGDGBD, will be called an open G!. Slide guitarists use this type of tuning a lot!.
Then there are altered tuning: EADGCE, OR EBDGBE!. In fact, there are an infinite ways of tuning your guitar, but everything is relative to the Standard Tuning in E!.
