If you're looking for a single, simple recommendation!.!.!. I recommend starting with a Dunlop tortex standard shape, !.73mm pick (the yellow one): http://accessories!.musiciansfriend!.com/p!.!.!.

It's a good middle-ground, versatile, pick suitable for pretty much any type of playing!. Or any medium thickness standard-shaped pick will do!.

Now if you want more details to think about later on!.!.!.

There are two main factors that affect pick choice:
1) How it feels while you play
2) How it makes the guitar sound

The differences in sound, however, are very subtle!. As a beginning player you may not notice it at all, and you certainly won't be worried about it!. So let's ignore that factor for now!.

Regarding the feeling, there are quite a few factors that affect how it feels:
* Pick size
* Pick shape, both the front view (ex: triangle vs!. standard), and side-view (ex: smooth and flat vs!. curved)
* Material (which, in addition to sound, affects how it feels, ex: smooth vs textured)
* Thickness

These are things you can only decide between after having experience with them!. And most of the differences are quite subtle!.

For starters, forget about all the nuances of differences, and we'll worry about only the major things:
* Smooth and glossy vs!. slightly textured
* Standard shape vs!. larger triangle

If you want to sink a little more money into it, you can also try a few different thickness, but at this stage in your playing I recommend simply getting medium thickness!.

So try these two pick types at the least:
Smooth/glossy (i recommend starting with medium): http://accessories!.musiciansfriend!.com/p!.!.!.
Slightly textured (I recommend starting with !.73): http://accessories!.musiciansfriend!.com/p!.!.!.

And if you want to try a large triangle shaped one (again, !.73 to start): http://accessories!.musiciansfriend!.com/p!.!.!.

After you get a feeling for your preferences on those two dimensions (material/texture, and pick size/shape), then start changing up the thicknesses if you want!. Then later on, you can start trying out some of the ones with unusual shapes or materials (for example, i like the Big Stubby picks for some types of playing http://accessories!.musiciansfriend!.com/p!.!.!.

Hope this helpsWww@QuestionHome@Com

I swear by Dunlop Tortex and Ultex picks (ultex are a LITTLE better, but twice the price)
I find acoustic easier with a thick pick
For acoustic i usually use at least !.73mm picks, though usually !.88mm
i say start on acoustic and maybe learn finger picking later, depending on your style of play, the only acoustic stuff i play is Tenacious D, covers from the Nirvana unplugged album, the Foo fighters unplugged album, some basic chord work ect!.
oh and Code Monkeys by Jonathan Coulton
on my electrics i usually use !.88mm, 1mm, or 1!.14mm depending on the song
though i play mostly thrash/speed/death metal and hardcore punkWww@QuestionHome@Com

Idk all depends, The louder you want your music the thicker pick you want, if your playin on acoustic you want a thinner one cause your proly not rockin out hardcore on a acoustic!. Thinner ones also are playerd alot of lighter noise overall!.

Thicker ones also sound a bit better with distortion in my realm of insanity!.

Picks are also relativly cheap, so just buy like 10 of each and see which one you like best!. My favorite pick (never lost it in my life =]) is a Jim Dunlop Medium pick, it works well for just about everything i play!. Power Chords, Chords, or just playin solo or solo-ish things!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Guitar picks are really cheap, maybe $!.25 to $!.50 each!. The best way to know which kind you like best is go to a music store and buy $5!.00 worth of picks of different thicknesses, sizes and materials, take them home and try them out over the course of the next several weeks or months as you learn to play!. There is no right or wrong answer to this question, its all a matter of personal preference!. You'll figure out for yourself which you like best!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

picks wont make a huge differnce!. get some of each there only like 25 cents each!. i like dunlop and ibanez picks there both really good!. my favorite picks would have to be the dunlop 13 series picks, u can get a dozen for $6 in any size!. i like !.72 size picks which are somewhat thin!. good luckWww@QuestionHome@Com

when i first started i found the thinner picks easier to use!.!. when you're a beginner it's also easier to use bigger picks!.!. now that i've been playing a while i prefer to use my fingers rather than a pick!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You gotta screw around with a few different thicknesses of guitar picks until you find one you are comfortable with!. You only know what one you like!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
