English horn is really a specialty instrument, not always called for in band or orchestra music!. When a composer or arranger wants one, the oboe player doubles!.

Why are you sick of playing the instruments!? Is it because you master them so quickly, or because you have to work so hard at them, or what!? I don't think switching a whole lot is a good idea either!. And a double reed instrument is significantly different than a brass!. You would have to go back to basics for the technique and fingerings - but it sounds like that's what you want to do!. I say if you love english horn, learn oboe!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The preforming arts is about doing what you love and not feeling obligated just because your good at something!. I would let the director know of your interest and let them know i realize this may take some initial outlay of time to learn all the necessary things for the instrument but i am dedicated to learning it!. At that point i would feel that they shouldn't object!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The only thing that would stop me is that you appear to want to change instruments each year!. If you are sure, go for it, but I hope this time next year you don't decide you would rather learn Bagpipes or something else!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
