I am doing an English project in which I have to write a prospectus (outline) on an imaginary movie based on Sophocles' play Antigone!. The movie has to take place in a time period other than the original 400 BC or the present!. Any ideas on a good rewrite that really fits with the characters!?Www@QuestionHome@Com
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: if you wanted to keep the same basic problem!. That of the burial thing with a civil war i would suggest an modern civil war!. Such as the American civil war!. If you want to imitate the central idea of an idealist insisting she does the right thing at the expensive of logic, going against a ruler doing the logical thing at the expensive of doing the right thing then any dictatorship would be a great setting!. I guess the important thing would be to fully understand the dilemas in the book and try to think of parrelles to each one individually!. Understand the Creon isnt right but neither is Antigone!. Antigone is a superstar diva whose two brothers, grandmaster Peri and M!.C!. Eteo, kill each other in a shootout between their two posses!. The record company exec, Mr!. Creon, decides that the record company will promote posthumous albums by M!.C!. Eteo but will just bury the catalogue of grandmaster Peri!. Antigone is distraught because she loved both of her brothers, and she pleads with Mr!. Creon (who is also her record exec), but he's immovable!. So she goes to her biggest concert ever at the Hollywood Bowl and fills it with cover versions of grandmaster Peri tracks, then in the end for effect kills herself onstage!. Alternatively, one brother could have been one of the terrorists on American Airlines Flight 11 that crashed into one of the twin towers, the other brother was a banker working in the tower!. Prayers and a memorial is given for the on one the plane while the other brother will have no prayers or memorials because he was working for the infidels!. For a chorus I would have women in burqas!. The burqa I think adds to the mystery of the chorus and is a bit of a homage to the Greek masks that the chorus was reputed to have worn!. It could be an all woman chorus!. The flip side of this could be to have George Bush as Creon and the two brothers died in Afghanistan!. One was a US Marine, the other was found at a religious camp!.
