Question: Rock Guitarist Learn to Play Classical Style!?
Can a rock guitarist with a reasonable amount of technique learn classical playing more easily because of experience with the instrument!? Or is it the other way, where they'll have to spend a lot of time just to unlearn bad habits!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

There most assuredly ARE bad habits in guitar playing!. Several of my friends had bad habits; those are the ones who needed carpal tunnel surgery!.

So if you have bad habits, you want to correct them whether you switch to classical or not!.

Back to your main question!. I've known rock guitarists who took up classical; the left-hand techniques are not different (if you learned your scales right in the first place)!. The more difficult part is the right-hand technique; you must learn a proper apoyando method of plucking the strings (and if you don't do finger-picking like that now, you risk carpal tunnel), and you must learn to get each finger fairly independent of the others!.

The really, really top classical guitarists are maniacs about their fingernails, especially right hand, where if you have just the right length and tip finish you get that precise edge on the attack for each note!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

its possible i'll point out Paul Gilbert on this!.He basically plays any style!. Every guitarist should know more than one style it increases there knowledge and there techniques even further!.I'm going to try classical pretty soon!. Styles I play are Metal,Rock,Blues!. I wanna take my playing further !. If you not learning or improving every time you practice it will be an Impossible task!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well you would already know chords and scales so I would assume it would be easier!. The hardest adjustment I think would be going from that skinny neck of the electric or acoustic guitar to the 2" nut of the classical guitar!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't think there's such a thing as 'bad habits' when it comes to guitar playing!. You'll pick classical up much more easily with experience and with new techniques improve your playing in both rock and classical genres!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
