500 australian is about 340 U!.S!.
There are a few Epiphone Les Pauls that are pretty good for that price!.
If you want to play "metal" then Ibanez is probably better for you!. But for more standard guitarists a Les paul or SG would be fine!. If you can get one with a "set" neck rather than a bolt on neck, do it!. Set necks provide better tone and sustain!.

like the Epiphone Vintage g-400 is $300 with a set neck

Epi Les Paul would be fine!. If you want to spend 500 on just a guitar and not an amp as well, go for something used, a studio les paul or strat!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
