Tips for Singing Auditions

1!. WHAT SHOULD I SING!?

Pick a song that shows what your voice sounds like at its best!. The musical director is more interested in hearing your voice than a polished performance!. It should be something you already know and don't have to worry about too much!. Here are some things to look for and things to avoid:

GOOD CHOICES: Broadway show tunes, standards (30s, 40s, 50s well-known tunes) folk songs, popular hymns or spirituals, songs from Disney musicals, contemporary Christian tunes (if you have accompaniment track or sheet music!.

NOT GOOD CHOICES: Any hip-hop or rap, most pop tunes, anything you wrote yourself, anything by Brittany Spears, N'Sync or Mariah Carey, the alto part to a song you did in school choir or church choir, hard rock tunes, TV commercials, anything too high, or more commonly, too low for your voice!.

2!. HOW MUCH OF IT SHOULD I SING!?

Usually a verse and a chorus of the song is sufficient!. If the song takes a long time to get to the "good part," skip the beginning and sing only the "good part!." Show off your voice!. If the song is very short, the music director may ask you to sing it twice!. Generally, prepare more than you need, but show the good stuff first!.

3!. WHAT IF I HAVE A COLD!?

EVERYONE ALWAYS HAS A COLD! Or is just getting over a cold, or is coming down with a cold!. The music director likely has the experience to hear through the cold!. Don't worry about it!. Do your best!.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, apologize for the audition you are ABOUT to give! The last thing a music director wants to hear is that they are about to hear a lousy audition!.

4!. SHOULD I TRY TO SING THE SONG OR ACT THE SONG!?

Acting is always better!. If you can sing it well, that's good too!. But play the scene!. Remember that you are auditioning for a play!. Even if the song is a hymn or folk song, sell it with your face and body!.

5!. DO I HAVE TO BRING SHEET MUSIC OR AN ACCOMPANIMENT TRACK!?

If you have sheet music, that would be best to bring!. Mark it where you want to begin and end!. Professional auditions often allow only 16-32 measures, but for most amateur productions, a verse and chorus would be fine!. If you have an accompaniment (karaoke) track, bring it, although the music director may not let you use the entire song!. Pick out the "best part" and start there!. (For example, fast forward to some place on the CD to get the second verse and start there!.)

MEMORIZE THE WORDS TO YOUR SONG!. Don't try to read the lyrics from some teeny-tiny printing (like in this FAQ!)!. Use your face to tell the story of the song!. Remember, the director wants to see your face here too!. Don't have it stuck in sheet music!. MEMORIZE THE WORDS TO YOUR SONG!.

6!. WHAT IF I MESS UP!?

If you forget the lyrics to your song, just keep going!. Sing "La, la, la" or whatever until you find your spot!. If your voice goes away for a moment, swallow and get back into the song!.

DON'T stop the audition unless the director instructs you to!. If things get bad, he or she will see that and let you go back, or try again, or tell you that he or she has heard enough to get a clear picture of your voice!. Trust the director!. DON'T STOP!. Let the director choose that option!.

Just as in a reading audition, the director wants you to succeed, wants you to be the person for the role, and wants to hear you at your best!. Music directors usually have extensive experience auditioning themselves, so they know the problems people have with singing!. And they usually can identify someone who simply forgets lyrics, someone whose voice is not cooperating, someone whose nerves are getting in the way, and someone who is afraid of singing in public!.

7!. HOW DO I STOP BEING AFRAID OF SINGING IN FRONT OF PEOPLE!?

Everyone gets nervous singing in front of people!. That's natural!. Here are some tips:

--Go first!. Get it over with and then sit there and enjoy everyone else!. --Breathe!. First push out all your air, then take a deep breath before you start!. --Drink lots of water before you have to audition!. Lubricate your voice!. --Act the song!. Act the character of the song!. Focus on the lyrics and selling the emotion of the soing!. That's much more important than how nervous you are!. --Smile!. (It creates endorphins and makes you feel better!.)

Remember: You want the music director and the director to "hire" you for a role in the musical!. Telling them that you "really can't sing" or "really can't sing in front of people" is an incredibly bad idea!. After all, a musical is performed in front of people! Don't try to convince the directors that you would be a very, very bad choice for the show!. It does no good and drives music directors completely crazy!.

SO: Pick a song, learn it, know it, don't apologize, sell the song, smile, and HAVE FUN! That's all it takes!. Good luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com
