I've seen it used three ways!.

One is the "funk" method!. When you hit a chord rock your foot forward so it goes trebly for that chord stab (or notes, etc)!. The rest of the time your foot stays rolled back!. How often you do this depends on the music and rhythm, I guess!. I don't play funk, so!.!.!. *shrug*

Two is the "filter" method!. Lots of guitarists do this!. Basically, roll it forward and backward until you find a place that your guitar sounds good at!. Then leave it there!. That's it!. As the other answerer said, the wah is basically a movable filter, and if you find a sweet spot, then use it to your advantage!. In one band I was in we covered the System of a Down song "Spiders", and I set my wah to 2/3rds up or so to give my guitar a certain "feel", a darker industrial feel to it!. I think I clicked off for the solo to open back up and be more "grrr"!. Technical term!. I've read about at least one guitarist using it always on to increase his "attack"!.

Three!.!.!. moving it slowly up or slowly down over a riff or over a solo!. Nothing jerky, just slow movements up and/or down!. This can develop into a melodic feeling of using the wah, but just moving up slowly up can give a bit of that electronic "rave" feeling, like your notes are slowly becoming clearer!.!.!. and clearer!.!.!. and clearer!.!.!. etc!.

Be chill with it, use it subtly!. It can add a lot to your music, but if you use it indiscriminately, it can take away just as much too!.

Good luck!

EDIT: Off the top of my head, I know that Godsmack uses a lot of wah!. Try to pick up the first album, that's the one I'm thinking of!. Papa Roach's "Infest" album has a good chunk of wah on it as well!.

Listen to Joe Satriani or Steve Vai and hear how they use wah effects extensively!. A wah is nothing more than a noise filter that lets you "sculpt" the shape of your sound!. Play your guitar and simply adjust the tone of your sound with the wah, don't waggle your foot all over the place!.

Of course, you can do that if you want to play funk!. Damp the strings with your fretting hand and waggle the pedal in time to the music for that "Shaft" sound!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
