Hi:

I would ask myself this!.!.!. "which one do I have the most desire and interest to learn!?" Thats all thats needed!.!. nothing more!. Selecting an instrument because someone says you have to learn it first is the worst way to start playing an instrument!. It is NOT necessary to learn guitar before you learn bass!. Depending on what level you take it to, one is just as hard as the other!. To many times in my 45+ years of playing ive seen where a student is forced into playing an instrument because someone said they had to!. Usually, the instrument becomes a big dust collector, as they didnt really have a desire to learn it in the first place!.

Now!.!.!. the pro's and cons of each!. An acoustic you can take just about anywhere anytime and make music with !. An electric guitar, you should have an amp, and at least 2 cables!. (always good idea to have a spare) People who play electric usually wind up adding a ton of effects later on, which means more money spent!

Bass guitar can be played without an amp if you go the acoustic bass route!. If wanting to play electric, should have an amp, and again, spare cable or two!. Now!.!. heres where the big difference lies!.!.!. with a guitar, you can just play a song and sing along with it!.!. no one else has to play if you dont want them to!. For the most part, bass is an instrument where you accompany other musicians!. Kind of hard to sit and strum some chords on the bass and sing! Some genres of music dont require the bassist play along with a drummer!.!.!.!.!. its in the bass players hands to provide the "groove"!. Folk rock and traditional bluegrass come to mind as 2 of those genres!.

Bottome line!.!. pick the instrument you are most interested in and want to learn the most!. Dont let anyone sway your decision!.

Hope this has helped, and good luck! Www@QuestionHome@Com

"Guitar" and "Acoustic" aren't two separate instruments!.

"Acoustics" are simply guitars that don't need to be plugged into an amplifier to be played!. They sound great when played solo, or they can be played in a group or band setting as well!. If you like folk, country, bluegrass, or rock, or if you plan on playing mostly by yourself, or if you like the idea of being able to take your guitar to the beach or camping, or out onto the porch to jam with friends, an acoustic guitar is a good choice!.

Electric guitars need to be plugged into an amplifier in order to generate sound!. They don't sound as good, IMO, played solo and sound best when played in a band!. If you like rock, heavy metal, or harder styles of music, you probably want an electric guitar!. But you can't take an electric guitar to play at the backyard barbecue, or camping in the woods, unless you've got a REALLY long extension cord :-)

Bass isn't really a guitar -- its a separate instrument with a separate role to fulfill in a band!. The bass player works closely with the drummer to create the basic rhythm groove for the band!. Its not generally a solo instrument; its really meant to be played in a band setting!. And its an electric instrument, so there again, not something you can take outside to play songs around the campfire!.

I play acoustic guitar and would recommend you start on that!. Anything you learn on acoustic guitar will be immediately transferable to electric guitar -- they're both tuned the same and the chords and scales, etc are all played the same -- and if you play guitar and decide to learn bass later, the guitar experience will help you greatly!. It depends what you want to do it for, the electric and acoustic guitars are very fun to play and are easy to mess around on!. They are also fun because when you learn enough chords you can play around and sing with it!. If you want to get a job playing an instrument though you are better off learning bass because there aren't nearly enough good bassists!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

A guitar is a guitar !. !. !. , but if you learn to play bass, bands are always looking for a good bass player!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I would go for bass because to find good players is so difficult!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
