Question: What is the purpose of double and triple tonguing and how can I best learn it!?

Double and triple tonguing sounds better that it really is!. It is a T-K-T-K ariculation for duple notes or a T-K-T T-K-T articulation for compound!.

As with all articulation, it must be done light, just a tap to the roof of the mouth, like a blink, no real pressure or it sounds heavy and like you are working too hard!.!.!.after all we're supposed to make it look easy right!?

Trevor Wye has a great book for Articulation!.!.!.it's better used with an experienced teacher as it does not include much instruction, but is full of articulation exercises!. Even more than double and triple tonguing!.

There is a whole lot more to it than the few paragraphs allowed here!.

Start slowly repeating the same note over and over again!.
Increase your speed
When you can articulate "pretty" 16th notes at about 120, then play groups of different notes, about eight or 12 groups, repeating them less and less until you are tonguing on a different note with each T or K sound!. It's a long process, but you will like the results!

I hope that gets you started!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I used to play the flute, and from what I can remember, double and triple tonguing helps you play faster!. It takes some time to get used to, but once you do, it makes fast passages much easier to play!. Good luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com
