A monologue is an extended, uninterrupted speech or poem by a single person!. The person may be speaking his or her thoughts aloud or directly addressing other persons, e!.g!. an audience, a character, reader, or inanimate object!.

As a literary device, it is most common in dramatic genres (plays, animated cartoons, film) but can also be found in prose fiction!. The term can also be applied to poems, which usually take the form of the thoughts or speech of a single individual!. In everyday usage, a long, rather boring speech by a conversation partner is sometimes called a monologue as well!.

The term 'dramatic monologue' is used both for monologues in plays and for a poetic genre!.

Instructions
Step 1 - Study examples of interior monologues by great writers such as James Joyce, William Faulkner and Joseph Heller!. Copy the parts you like from these passages by hand so you get the rhythm of the language!.

Step 2 - Identify the character you think would suit a monologue!. Because this is a device for introspection, a superficial character who doesn't reflect on her actions or beliefs isn't suitable for an interior monologue!.

Step 3 - Work on developing your chosen character!. You must know his mind well!. An interior monologue reveals what the character thinks and feels about a particular situation, person or issue and what motivates his actions!.
