Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
1) Be patient!. It's going to take 2-5 years, or more before you'll be shredding on your own (ie, improving, as opposed to recreating somebody else's solos which is easier)!.

2) Learn music theory!. To be a lead guitarist you really need to understand music itself!. This is a long and difficult, but rewarding process!. Your best bet is to hire a music teacher!. Alternatively, there are tons of books available!. See this other answer on this topic: http://answers!.yahoo!.com/question/index;!.!.!.

3) Use a metronome!. No if's and's and but's!. Use it!.

4) Practice, practice, practice! It's not enough to practice though - you need to practice CORRECTLY! This means starting very slow, and completely *mastering* something before increasing the speed!. If you speed up your playing when you have any dead notes, extra notes, noise, etc !.!.!. you'll end up being a bad, sloppy player!. And it's a difficult habit to break!. Don't use distortion, as this will mask any errors!.

5) Take long (12+ hour) breaks after getting your head wrapped around a new exercise!. Physiologically your brain needs time to process new things, especially when you're talking about "muscle memory"!. You can practice a new exercise for 40 hours straight, but you won't get any better than practicing it for 30 minutes!.

6) Have patience!. Yes!.!.!. it needs to be stated again!. You're not going to become Petrucci overnight!. There are no shortcuts!.

Hope this helps!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

ive been playing for a little while and i probably play 60 hours at least a week since i have nothing else to do it took me about a month and i could play almost every killswitch engage song and about half of whitechapels songs all the way through with solos and everything so if you practice enough you can do it in a couple of months i suggest watching videos on youtubeWww@QuestionHome@Com

You have to learn guitar scales!.!.!. it really depends on that kind of music you want to play!. My favorite guitar scale for jamming out solos is the pentatonic, which is a big favorite among blues and rock players!.!.!. But if you are into metal kind of solos, then i would suggest touching on classical guitar roots, mainly spanish classical guitar!. The scales and playing styles of them is clearly an influence to searing fast metal guitar solos!.

I would suggest this website: http://www!.all-guitar-chords!.com/guitar_!.!.!.

It is a scale generator that, well!.!. generates scales in what type you want and what key!. Have fun and express!.
