This varies from school district to school district!. I do not know how the district are organized regionally in IL, but here in NY they are by the city, town, or groups of small villages!. I live 100 miles north of NYC - and starting teaching salary, Bachelor's degree, no experience, HERE is $48,000!. With you Master's degree (required in 5 years) and experience, many teachers retire here at over $100,000!. However, this is NY state - the cost of living is high, and so are taxes and real estate!. The American Federation Of teachers used to have a huge chart that told you the adjusted cost of living for every state - just how far your salary would go, factored for all these things!. Google the AFT sites until you find it - this might help you!.

Meanwhile, you know what to do to get INTO a good college - and make sure your piano skills are FABULOUS - you will have to run many rehearsals from the keyboard with no accompanist!.

Many private schools do NOT pay as well as public - again, this has to do with the area you work in!.

Ok, Megaman doubts me!. Since I was a teacher from 1971 to 2008, I think I *know* we what get paid!. You do not ASK for a salary - it is contractual, and you are offered what the Union has negotiated!. Yes, you must pay for your grad school!. OTOH, my son and DIL teach in PA!. Staring salaries there were lower 5 years ago ( high Thirties) but the school district *reimburses* you for the cost of your grad school tuition - and then also gives you the salary increase upon completion of the degree!. We looked at both states - NY and PA - to see which was a better place to work - it came out even at that point!.

http://www!.aft!.org/salary/index!.htm is the site I mentioned - it is accurate as of 2005, but will give you an idea of how far your money goes on a teacher's salary in every state!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

i feel like since it no longer says im a top contributor, youll take me less seriously, but how bout if i say i used to be one but ive been busy :]

um, id say 48000 is alot to ask for, and not something to be expected!. it depends on how many hours a day you work for, what degree you have, and just straight up how good you are and how good your students are!. I think base salary in california where I used to live was somewhere in the mid 30k range!. And yes, that was at the private school I attended in my youth!. Believe it or not, private school teachers usually get paid MUCH less than public school teachers, unless they are at a for profit school, in which case it is the same!. I myself would never work at a for profit school though, as i think its disgusting to profit off of children's education!. on average, a public school teacehr can expect a few grand extra per year than a private school teacher, and music teachers and school teachers are one and the same provided that they work about the same hours!. If you want to be a high school choir teacher, thats a very noble thing to do!. Chances are thoguh, you'll probably need to look for a bit of work outside of just being a choir teacher, which usually means private lessons!. probably the greatest invention for musicians ever, you can charge anywhere from 30-100 dollars an hour, average being 50!. If one could work a 9-5 job as a private lesson teacher!.!.!.!.We'd all be rich!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Most states have standardised pay rates!. Since public school teachers are paid from public monies, this is a matter of public record!. You can call your county government official, the teachers' union, or simply ask a teacher you know!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

you better have a working spouse! :)Www@QuestionHome@Com
