Question: Guitar body question!?
I was going to buy a guitar kit to build my own from "scratch" and i really like this one : http://cgi!.ebay!.com/ws/eBayISAPI!.dll!?Vie!.!.!.
but there is a bit of a crack thing on it as shown in a picture!. And since they aren't trying to hide it then it can't be a terrible thing!. It is not intended to be a "serious" guitar, i just want a project to do and maybe learn some stuff!. But of course i want to be able to play it and my main question is,
"will this thing explode if I try to string it up"
because guitar strings on average put like 100-150 pounds of pressure on it!.
OR could i just get some wood filler and fill in that crack and then all better!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

that is in the cavity of the body, not the neck, guitar necks don't explode, the kit looks fine to me; ask the seller what the crack is all about and does he have a kit without the crack!. OK I see now what the deal is the router plunged through the back of the guitar where the pickups go in!. I would putty the small hole and let the big dog walk!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think your best bet is not to spend a lot of cash on it, try to get some money off for the crack just in case!. You can also send the ebayer a message asking about it, you can ask a professional or buy a guitar kit from an ACTUAL guitar store or something like that!. Awesome project though, good luck :)Www@QuestionHome@Com

That crack looks like it was part of a tree knot!. Since the grain is in a straight line with the neck tension, I don't think you'll have any problems with it!. I haven't found any wood filler which is dense enough, so stay away from that!.

I don't think it will "explode" when you string it, but I think you'll have a problem installing pickups and the springs in the back for the bridge!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

That "crack" looks like the result of a knot in the wood!. I would ask the seller if it goes all the way through - like, does it show from the back!.

Since it's in the core it might never be a problem!. I don't know if you can fill it with glue!. That might permanently change the tone!. Even if it never breaks it might always sound "muddy"!.

A guitar's tone is very dependant on the solidity of the wood!. For example, a Les Paul is not really a hollow body!. It has a solid "block" or backbone of hard wood down the middle with two hollow boxes on either side!.

For that reason you might not be satisfied with the sound, although you'll certainly benefit from the experience of building it yerself!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
