Question: Best way to learn guitar without a teacher!?
i am going to get a guitar, but I don't want a teacher, cause that will mean i will have lessons and it'll only be a novelty cause i really hate having to go to a scheduled lesson, i would rather practice whenever i want!.
I used to play piano, but because of the teacher and scheduled lessons and all, i gave it up!. i don't want this to happen again!.
the only problem is, is i know if i don't have a teacher i will pick up bad habits, and t will be really hard to get rid of them!. what is the best substitute for a teacher!? money doesn't really matter to much, as long as it isn't too high(like 500$) cause a teacher will end costing a lot anyways!.

thanks!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Your statement does not come accross as a person very much interested in putting the required discipline to learn ANY instrument!.
That being said I will first recommend this little book that
won't put you out very much ($10!.95)!.

HOW TO PLAY GUITAR - Everything You Need To Know To Play Guitar - By Roger Evans!. A best seller since it came out in 1979!.

This book will get you started in choosing the right guitar for YOU
and help you in getting good basic steps in starting to play!.

Sooner or letter there will be a point where you have "saturated"
with self-teaching and a "qualified"teacher for your particular guitar style will be of great value!.

Notice that I said "qualified" because there are many "teachers" of guitar that cannot read a musical bar or play more than
a few chords -never beyong the fith fret- and are not worth the cost of transportation to their "studio"!.

The qualified teacher will expect you to come prepare (meaning put practice time at home ) and if you are not ready to do
so don't waste your money or the teacher's time because qualified teachers never lack for students that are prepare to discipline themselves to practice!.

Teachers of music tell me: I rather have a student with little talent but eager to learn and willing to apply themselves by practicing every day than an apparent "talented" student that is wishy-washy about learning!.
Those students are not ready to the challenge of learning a musical instrument!.

Good Luck in whatever decision you decide to make!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Gotta love Kab's response - could not have said it better myself!. If you try to *learn* on your own, months from now, you will still stink!. A couple of lessons with a teacher, you will be confident and have learned some SKILLS that will encourage you to go further!.

The fact you quit piano is in the past!. Get over yourself and pick up the phone!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

With your attitude I would never be in a band with you!. Your way or the Highway!. You won't dedicate yourself to learning!.
OK I have said that!.
Find a teacher that can excite you!. One that will make you want to practice!. With the $ being of no concern, you can afford the best!.
Otherwise go find another web site that won't see or hear what you are doing and become another of those who either give it up or become lousy players!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It's really easy to teach yourself!. First you have to know the string names!.

E,B,G,D,A,E fro top to bottom!. then you have to learn the basic chords

A, E, Em, D, C, and G you can find those on the internet!.

http://www!.guitaralliance!.com/images/ope!.!.!.

here's a list of guitar chords the ones going down like this

__________

__________

___________

stand for the frets!. the ones going across like this
I I I I
I I I I
I I I I

stand for the strings!. the strings at the left are the ones going from top to bottom!.

then you have to learn how to read a guitar tab!. you can get them at
http://www!.ultimate-guitar!.com/

you will see something like this

E-----1-------5-------2--------7
B--------------5-------3--------
G-----1-----------------4-------6
D--------------6------------------5
A----------------------------------
E----------------------------------

the letters represent the strings!. the numbers represent the frets!. so first you would put your finger on string E, fret one!. then your other finger on string G fret 1!. and you would strum it a couple times!. then you would take all your fingers off and put your finger on the E string fret five!. B string fret 5 and D string fret six!. and so on!.

then there's tuning your guitar!.!. Strum your top E string and look at your tuner!. the letter E should pop up and the little bar will do to the right or the left!. if it go's to the right it means you loosen your guitar string, if it goes to the left you tighten your string!. You keep on doing that to your last string!.

Oh, and if you strum say the b string and the srting sign comes up as say A then your guitar is REALLY out of tune!.
