SG will be better than the Strat for metal!. Strats really aren't designed for this kind of music!. You can play metal in standard easily!. Most metallica is in standard tuning!. Some songs will be in drop D!. If you're tuning more than half a step down (Eb tuning), you should take your guitar into the shop to be adjusted for that tuning, as the intonation of the strings will get messed up if you don't!. Really the only reason to play down half a step or whole step is to make it easier for the vocalist to sing a note!. But if a particular artist you love plays down half a step, do it!. For example, I used to be in love with the music of SRV, and all his songs are in Eb tuning, so I adjusted my guitar likewise!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Actually, the best tuning for metal is the standard tuning!! If you want a deeper sound, try to tune it half-step down!. Otherwise, there aren't any useful tunings!. Perhaps also drop-D!. Still, the standard is the best one!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I tune standard 440A concert pitch!. Use the SG for metal the SG has humbucking (double coil ) pickups that have a higher output than the single coil pickups in the Strat!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Drop D and Drop C mostly; thicken up on the strings to reduce slack; you can play heavy metal on either guitar http://www!.fretjam!.com for tuningsWww@QuestionHome@Com
