If you heard this in choir or chorus, it refers to the timbre or vocal brightness characteristic!. A comparison using musical instruments an example would be the Kazoo and the Clarinet!. They're both higher pitched instruments, but the the Kazoo is a wide open nasally and sometimes annoying sound and the clarinet, especially in its mid and low ranges, has a dark, warm syrupy sound!.

In vocal music, especially opera and musical theater, labels are put on voices to indicate range and brightness!. Pitch ranges are generally soprano as the highest, then going down alto, tenor and bass!. There are some ranges in between mezzo-soprano under soprano, contralto under alto, etc

Along with those names for voice pitch or note ranges are labels for brightness or color qualities!. Sopranos from bright to dark are listed with the names coloratura, soubrette, lyric, spinto and dramatic!.

Both mezzo-soprano and contralto have lyric and dramatic as brightness/darkness and strength quality names!.

Tenors have a whole passel of quality names - leggiero, lyric, spinto, dramatic and heldontenor!. A comparison example would be that a Lyric tenor would probably be cast for a boys part in a musical or Gilbert and Sullivan light opera, while a heldontenor is typically the type needed for a Wagner opera!. (A heldontenor is the tenor equivalent of dark beer!.)

Bass voices have differing qualities as well!. Buffo is brighter for more comic roles, bosso profundo is a very deep often sinister sound and bel Canto is a voice that is open!.

I am a baritone (mid way between bass and tenor) but I have a bright baritone voice, which is usually considered to be a lyric baritone!. If you've ever heard the character Figaro in the Barber of Seville, he is most likely cast in the opera with a Lyric or Bel Canto Baritone!.

So I am often jealous of you people with those darker, rich, strong dramatic voices!.

With regards to actual, literal sound, a warm voice would have some action going on in the 100-300 Hz range!. It basically means their voice resonates strongly in the lower pitched sound levels!. But "warm" is subjective!.

Warm could also mean a genial or friendly sounding voice!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
