Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Short stories should revolve around one significant event in a person's life, so don't make it an adventure with lots of episodes - that's what novels do!. You decide your theme, write from experience!. Have your protagonist enter into a situation that teaches them a significant lesson!. It doesn't have to be wildly dramatic!. James Joyce's short stories in 'Dubliners' are among literature's greatest and they normally revolved around fairly everyday situations!. For example, a girl chats to tramp on a bus then when she gets home she realises, despite her kindness, he stole from her!. That realisation - what Joyce calls 'epiphany' - is what short stories do best!.
