Question: Trumpet Mouthpiece question!?
I'm a four year trumpet player (Sophomore in High School) and I'm currently deciding to purchase a new mouthpiece!.

Currently I use a Yamaha 11B4 mouthpiece!. Beginners mouthpiece correct!?

I need a mouthpiece that would help me increase my range, as in train me!. Not cheating my way into a higher range, so that if I use my 11B4 mouthpiece again after using the new mouthpiece, I could finally hit above High D!.

To strengthen my chops!.

The most important thing in choosing an efficient mouthpiece is that it allows you to play with a good sound throughout your entire range, for the type of music that you play!. An efficient mouthpiece should allow the lips to vibrate freely and to move freely, allowing the player to develop a cushion of muscle in their embouchure!. With these factors met, a good sound, accuracy, good intonation, good articulation, good flexibility, good endurance, and good range are easily achievable!.!.!. at all dynamic levels!.

Despite their popularity, low prices, and easy access, Bach mouthpieces are not for everyone!. In general, most trumpet players start out on a Bach 7C, or a copy of a Bach 7C!. As most players begin to mature, the 7C doesn't work so well any longer!. So, they move to a Bach 5C or a Bach 3C!. Eventually, many end up on a Bach 1 1/2C!. Why the need to progress to the larger inner diameter!? To make it easier to "manipulate" the lips!.

The 11B4 is a very good mouthpiece!.!.!. not a beginner's mouthpiece!. In my opinion, it will allow you to get a good sound, and good range!. However, if you have thicker than average lips, the flat rim (#4) of the mouthpiece will not allow your lips to vibrate freely!. If this is the case, it may be best to stay pretty close to the same diameter as the 11B4, and go to a Yamaha Signature Series - Canadian Brass Trumpet L, designed with Jens Lindemann!.

Before you jump into another mouthpiece and begin an expensive "Mouthpiece Safari", I would suggest looking at ways to develop your range through good practice techniques!. Practice softly!. It will help you to keep your lips together, and it help you learn to focus your airstream!. It will also tell you right away if you have the right mouthpiece!. Play long tones, going into the upper register, using as little mouthpiece pressure as possible!. Start by playing only the first two or three notes from a scale!. If you can't play the upper notes easily, stop and try it again!. Keep a record of your progress!. It will take time!.

If you don't have a good private teacher, and you are serious about developing as a trumpet player, your money would be better spent on private lessons than on mouthpieces!. Your other option is to seek out a trained mouthpiece consultant, and follow his or her advice!.

Best of luck to you!
