Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
as a beginner, trumpet is easier to control!. somebody already covered trhe versatility of trumpet (used in marching, concert, & jazz)!.
horn players are more needed at the professional level and horn players are more likely to get scholarships in college!.
many of my friends play both, so you could concieveably start on trumpet then add horn later!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

French horn because:
- Not so many people play it, so generally a lot more opportunities open for you!.
- Personally, I think the sound is a lot smoother, rounder and beautiful!.
- There are some killer horn solos in orchestral music!.
- Huge pitch/dynamic range which is a lot of fun!

HOWEVER, trumpets often get the melody more than the horns, are cheaper, easier to play and easier to transport!.

Essentially the decision is yours, but I really think french horn is the way to go because it's so beautiful and an underplayed instrument!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

French horn is a much better instrument!. Horn is harder to learn and control than a trumpet and young band music is going to have much better parts for the trumpet players!. However I think it is worth it!. Whoever said the horn is subtle is very wrong!. Think of every kickass piece of movie music!. That was a horn!. Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Jaws, Imperial March has a horn solo half way through, and many others!. High school band music has some really great horn parts that many trumpets would probably envy!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'd probably pick the trumpet if you want to go into marching band or some sort of jazz band!.
But if you're more interested in concert music, the choice is yours!.
Find some recordings of each instrument and if one sounds better to you, go for it!.

And remember, you can always learn the other later!.
I have friends who play both!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

the trumpet has a brighter sound!. the french horn is like a sound coming from a cave!. if you chose the trumpet, you would play the melody!. which would be good if you wanted to be a standout and look good!. but if you wanted to play french horn, you would be a backround brass, meaning that you would play the bass line or in harmony!.

I play the french horn (going into 7th grade) and honestly it is harder to play the horn than it is the trumpet, but the trumpet section most likely will be the most crowded it was at my school!. personally they both have pros and cons you should do what you want! :)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Trumpets do get a lot more glory!. They get to play lots of melody and are very exposed!. The French horn is more subtle, but it is unique and not many people can play it!. Ultimately, you will have to decide which is best for you!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

you dont have to trigger on the french horn!. on the trumpet every time you play a low d uo have to push one of your valves uot!. it gets anoying because you have to keep on lubricating it so it still movesWww@QuestionHome@Com
