The best way is to get a teacher!. The next best would be to pick up some drum DVDs!. Hudson Music's produces a LOT of good educational dvd's!.

Some good books to look out for are:

Stick Control (George Stone)
Realistic Rock (Carmine Appiece)
The art of bop drumming (John Riley)
New Breed (Gary Chester)

A few quick tips:

- always practice with a metronome
- always practice at different tempos, especially slow (40-50 bpm)
- listen to different styles of music!.!.!. pop, rock, metal, jazz, R&B, Mowtown, afro-cuban, reggae!.!.!. anything!.

- practice playing at different dynamic levels (from very soft to very loud)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Wahoo! Drum set!.
Listen to others!.
Play along with the music!.
Practice with a metronome!.
Play different styles!.
Don't go away from the basics!. For example, try doing paradiddles on different drums instead of just the snare!. You will find your drumset open up to you!.

Another thing to do is listen to the different sounds your drums make!. See if you can get your drums to "sing" the melody!. Develop different voices for your drums (hi pitched stuff, low pitched stuff, cymbals)!.

Get a private teacher!.

Learn what role the drums play in the music!. Is it keeping time!? Is it soloing!? Is it setting the style for the group!?

Good luck and have a great time!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
