It doesn't take long to get pretty good and play alot of songs you hear on the radio, as long as you practice alot!. I can already play the intro to some of my favorite songs!. My teacher was just someone that I knew that played guitar, and he wound up being a great teacher!. My teacher advised me to go online and to start trying to learn tabs of the songs I know, which really helped!. I also downloaded the software called Powertab editor, which basically plays the song for you so you can liten to the rythm, while you watch it play the tab!. Theres alot more to it, and I'm still getting used to what I can do with it, but so far I know its extremely awesome!. The only bad thing is that its a little tricky to download but this site really helped:http://www!.power-tab!.net/getarticle!.php!?!.!.!. you can follow the link above, or just go to http://www!.ultimate-guitar!.com/ and search for your song, filter the songs by power tabs in the top bar that says Search results, and choose a song!. When the screen comes up it will have a grey box that says Please note that you must have Power Tab software installed on your computer in order to view this file!. The word installed will be a hyperlink and click on it!. Scroll down to the hyperlink that says install powertab editor!. This is a full set of directions on how to install it!. When your done you go to Ultimate guitar!.com and search for any tabs you want but make sure they are power tabs or else it wont work!. When you get to the tab screen like before when you clicked the installed hyperlink in the grey box, scroll down to the bottom left to the blue box and click on Download "!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!." powertab it will ask you if you want to save or open!. click save!. Just remember it's not about playing for people at first when you are just learning!. It's about playing for yourself!. But if you go to guitar center and get some Dvd's that show you the basics of the guitar you will learn much faster and will be able to jam with people at the same level as you!. It shouldn't take that long if you are gifted musically!.Www@QuestionHome@Com G'day Darien, most importantly it takes determination, lots of frustration, am a beginner am 55 so you have tone of time, don't get discouraged when things don't always go as planned, give your fingers and wrist plenty of rest, warm up b4 playing, avoid injuries at all costs!. Small steps, learn one or two chords remember them, once you have the committed to memory move onto the next two!. Sheesh my finger tips hurt like hell for a while, all part of the game!. don't compare yourself to your friends or anyone else's progress as this can lead to feeling like you can't do it, some ppl take yrs to learn, get a good friend to give you some tips, always helps when someone helps, lastly make sure your learn correctly, as you will have to unlearn what you are doing wrong, a friend will make sure you don't make mistakes!. I am also learning to read music, so I eventually will be able to play anything, may be 80 but who cares!. it is a nice instrument!. You'll probably be able to play a few songs within a couple weeks - songs that just have 3 chords or whatever!. Then you'll just continue learning more & more chords & more difficult chords, and just keep going from there!Www@QuestionHome@Com Nobody can answer that question!. There isn't a magical moment when you can say that you've "learned the guitar"!. I've been playing my instrument for 30 years, and been getting paid to play for 25 of them!.
