There are several ways!.

Two Condenser microphones set back about a foot from the drums at each corner of the set!.

Two condenser mics about 16 inches above the cymbals at the corners of the set!.

One pencil condenser mic under the snare, two pencil mics over the cymbals over at the corners of the set and a large kick drum mic!.

You can mic the whole set with various mics (each piece)

Recording drums that sound good outside a pro studio is very tough (especially if you can't multi-track record)!. There's a lot of very good modeling software available now - you can program tracks and never know that it wasn't a real performer!.

If you do have multitrack recording capabilities, you want to mic your snare/toms as close as possible!. Cymbal mics should be at least 2-3 feet over the kit, and you have to listen to make sure there's not too much room sound or that they aren't phasy to the other mics!.!.!. with that said, if it's not done well your tracks will probably suffer so definitely investigate software :)Www@QuestionHome@Com
