You came to the right person, my friend!.
I've been playing for roughly twelve years, have composed about 4GB in music, and have a few albums in the works!.

First thing's first: I don't care what anyone will tell you - You must learn to read music!. Go to your local music shop or guitar center and ask for a basic note reading book and then scale up (ha, music puns) from there!. I would recommend you learn guitar and then switch to bass - in doing so, you get the benefit of having learned to play both instruments (minus some technique based stuff - slapping, popping, etc!.!.!.) and another which I'm sure you haven't heard of - the Oud!.

So, pick up a guitar note-reading book, learn to read music, and for easy songs, I would recommend "Wise Man", "Creep", or the intro to "Don't Fear The Reaper!." Keep in mind that most of your work will actually be involved in the books you get, because they do have full length pieces in them!. It will be boring at first, but it'll pick up very soon!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you know how to play the bass, then you can learn how to play guitar!. Playing the bass trains your ear to hear chord changes!.

Just one word!. Tablature, just like a lot of these guys have said!. Tab gives you a picture of where to put your fingers on the fretboard!. Using tab you can teach yourself the chords, and using tab for songs you want to learn, you can teach yourself how to play the songs, because tab will tell you where to switch chords!.

I know if you can play the bass, you can hear the rest of it well enough to teach yourself!. And though it may be true you can learn a lot from teachers and from learning to read music, to get you started, you can get pretty far by just continuing to train your ear with a little help learning chords from tab!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yeah I did the same as you!. self taught!. Bass is the easiest instrument to learn but the hardest to master!. the second poster has a good answer I also started out by breaking down Nirvana and White Stripe grooves!. the thing abput bass is you want to play the same thing over and over again with some small variations once in a while!. its very easy to over play a bass!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

try going to a music shop nd ask if they have any teachers!? i dont know how old you are but if your in school try asking ur music teacher she/he may know or someone look in the paper and ask around if you have the money to pay for lessons!. xxWww@QuestionHome@Com

learn the major chords first and then the minors!. You will find that many popular songs use only these chords!. Nirvana & the white stripes have easy chords, try them!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
