Question: Suggestions for slap bass strings!?
I have a Ibanez Active SR 300 DX and I use strings that are Regular Slinky Ernie Ball strings sizes 50 70 85 and 105!. They are great strings when playing punk or metal, but I cant get the right sound for funk with slap bass!. I know its not my technique thats lacking since Ive done it on other basses and I'm pretty sure Actives are good for slap!. Any suggestions for strings!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Your strings are too big!. The g string should be a 45 at the most!. Lots of slappers use 42, 40, and I've even seen 35s (that's a bit ridiculous, if you ask me :-))!. You can keep the low e at 105, but lots of guys go with 100!. The brand of string isn't as important!. That's more of a preference thing!. Active pickups work fine for slapping (some prefer passive including myself)!. The guy above got it turned around though!. Active pickups are louder than passive!. If you are really going to get into slapping, I would suggest getting a good compressor!. It'll really smooth out the bumps and you can go back and forth between playing styles (slap, pick, finger, etc!.) without big changes in volume!. Hope this helps!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Elixers are the best strings!.!. but Whew!.!. they are a little expensive!. And yeah, actives are the best for slap, because you get too much volume on the passives!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
