A lot of songs are made up of chords, and it's a very essential thing to know on an instrument!. Without knowing chords you won't know how to play songs or recognize notes that make UP those chords!.

Chord diagrams show you what strings to play and which ones not to!.

Since you're a beginner, here's a link of the basic chords:

And here are Dm and F:

Depends on the chord my friend,
Some chords have only 4 or 5 strings strummed at once and you'll learn how to do that!. And even 2-3 strings for power chords

Songs usually have a few chords when they play!. If you count the beat, 1-2-3-4, you can hear the chord change!.

For every guitar player, it is extremely important to learn chords!.

The link below has every chord known to man

All songs are written in a certain Key Signature (which determines which notes will be sharp or flat, if any)!. The chords you play depends on the key the song is in!. The major scale has the following structure: Major, Minor, Minor, Major, Major, Minor, Diminished!.

So for the key of C (which has no sharps or flats) we have: C, d, e, F, G, a, b* (where caps=major, and lower case=minor, *=diminished)!.

So if your in the key of C and want to play a D chord, you have to play d minor (because a D major has an F#, but d minor has a normal F)!. If you want to play a G, you have to play a G major!.

Hope that helps and wasn't too confushing!.
