The major scale is derived from playing C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C!. This scale is also one of the "modes" (Ionian)!. The other six modes can be derived from this scale, and what makes each mode different is the location of the half steps in each mode!. Using the Ionian mode, the half-steps are between the third and fourth notes (3/4) and also between the seventh and eighth notes (7/8)!.

The Dorian mode is derived from playing D-E-F-G-A-B-C-D!. Half steps between 2/3 and 6/7!. This mode is used a lot by blues guitarists!.

The Phyrigian mode is derived from playing E-F-G-A-B-C-D-E!. Half steps between 1/2 and 5/6!. This mode is used a lot in Flamenco-style guitar!.

The Lydian mode is derived from playing F-G-A-B-C-D-E-F!. Half steps between 4/5 and 7/8!. This mode is used fairly frequently by jazz guitarists!.

The Mixolydian mode is derived from playing G-A-B-C-D-E-F-G!. Half steps between and 3/4 and 6/7!. This mode is used a lot in guitar solos for rock/metal!.

Phrygian E-F-etc to E
Lydian F-G etc to G,
Mixolydian G-to G,
Aeolian A-to A (like natural minor),
Locrian B to B (Forbidden by Pope Gregor!), and
