Question: Acoustic Guitar, should I use a pick!?
I'm just starting to learn guitar, but I'm wondering if I should use a pick or not, as some do and some don't!. Why do they use a pick!? Why do some prefer not to!? What should I do!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I first learned without the use of picks!. My thumbnail and forefinger were my primary sources of picking on the guitar!. Learning to use a pick in the initial part of mastering the guitar can be distracting!. I concentrated more on chords and their transitions than I did with picks!.

Later, I began using thumbpicks!. I never could hold a straight pick in my hand long enough to make a difference!. It would fly off to the four winds!. Consequently, by using a thumbpick and manicured, natural nails, I began playing fingerstyle, just as Chet Atkins had done!.

Picks are used for crisper attacks and volume, but a good acoustic amplifier can even the odds on that too!.

For now, while you're learning the basics, don't become overwhelmed about using the picks!. The time will come later when you can make that decision!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Use a flat pick!. One day you're gonna have to use one so start now!. :-) Every guitarist uses a pick because your thumb alone can't move really quickly to play solos or do complicated strumming patterns!. Plus, trying to do an up stroke with your thumb is hard!. Fingerpicking is a different story, but sometimes you can combine using a pick for the three low strings and fingers for the three high strings!.

If you play country music, then you'd want to use a thumb pick seeing as there are no blazing solos or tough riffs to play!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

A flat pick or finger picks will give you more volume and crisper sound!. A flat felt pick will give you a bit more volume but a softer sound!. Fingers alone will give you nice tone by themselves!. You also could combine the two, a thumb pick on your thumb and plain fingers!. Try them all and pick what you like best!. Experiment!. If you are going to use a slide, though, I would recommend using a flat pick!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

When i started learning i used a pick just because it was easyer and i got a better sound but there is a style called finger picking and that's where you use your fingers but i dint think it really matters which one you use!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
