Hi there!. I'm a college music professor and have been the Director of Choral Activities at my college (a small, Christian, liberal arts college in the midwest) for the last 3 years- I'm moving up to a state school this year!. I have been in charge of all vocal auditions for the last three years, as I also teach voice!. Usually for a music audition, they will expect to hear all classical repertoire!. When they ask for 3 contrasting pieces, usually this means they would like variety of tempi, language and style!. I would recommend the following:

For the first two:

One fairly slow, legato piece in a foreign language (Italian, German, French)
A contrasting piece (faster) in a foreign language (Italian, German French)

OR
One opera/oratorio aria (preferably in foreign language)
One art song (preferably in foreign language)

For your third piece, it would be best to stick with a classical arrangement of a hymn, spiritual or gospel song!. Or a musical theater piece!.

Now, if you aren't currently studying voice with someone, and you don't have these pieces in your repertoire, three weeks isn't much time to put those kinds of pieces together!. Stick with simple pieces, and things you might already know!. When I hear auditions I would much rather hear simple pieces performed well (and MEMORIZED-- always be MEMORIZED!), then ill-prepared pieces that are more difficult!. If you're not currently taking voice lessons, it might be worth enlisting a voice teacher for a couple lessons a week before your audition to make sure your pronunciations and interpretations are correct!.

Finally, call the music department and verify that your literature choices are acceptable!. Hope this helps! And best of luck to you!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I would assume since it's for college, you would need classical pieces!?

I would suggest:

Bach (he's the basics!)
Chopin/Debussy/Beethoven maybe!?
Contemporary composer, something atonal, perhaps!?

Other than that, I don't know what else you could use for classical!. I think that's what most colleges ask for: Baroque, Romantic/Classical, Contemporary!.

About "popular" music, I don't know!

Good luck on your audition! =)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Slow Me Down by Emma Rossum
I Can Only Imagine by Mercy Me

Those are the only two I can think of!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
