There are many ways to tune a stringed instrument, but for someone who is just starting out, I would recommend trying one of the following:
1!. Tune to a piano- keeping in mind that a pianos white keys go in alphabetical order from A to G, tune the thickest string (or the one closest to your head when the instrument is sitting in your lap) to E!. This can be done by listening to the E note on the piano and then turning the E tuning peg higher or lower to match its pitch!. Tune the next string to A by using the same process!. The following string should be tuned to D, and the last string (the one closest to your lap) should be tuned to a G!.
2!. Use a tuner- A tuner is an electronic device which can be purchased for $10-100 at any local music store or even online!. All newly purchased tuners come with instructions, but incase you purchase a used one, here are some guidlines to follow: Pluck the note closest to your head!. Turn the tuning peg until the tuner specifies that you are playing an E note!. Do the same to the next three strings, tuning them to A, D and G in that order!.

As long as you have one sting tuned you can go to the 5th fret and go to the next string down and it should sound the same!. If not tune the string that is not on the 5th fret!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
