Congratulations for being interested in learning to ply an instrument!.
Since your choice is the guitar and you are just "starting"
I like to recommend this little book to you :
HOW TO PLAY GUITAR by Roger Evans
Cost $10!.95 at book stores or they can order it for you!.

Sub-tiltled:Everything You Need To Know To Play The Guitar
(from choosing and buying the right guitar for you,
starting to play,Tuning, chords,Starting To Read Music, etc)!.

I believe that this book is worth about 4 hours sessions with
a private tutor and a heck of a lot cheaper!.

If you are interested in really learning well then
learning to sight read music is the way to go!.
Your options once you get the basics are no longer limited!.
TABS is not altogether bad but it limits you tremendously!.
I know many very good guitar performers that lost engagements because the type of music required by the host/employer at a function was not available in Tabs
Other guitarists who could read (sight-read) the musical staff were always able to land good paying functions!.

Some of my professional guitarist friends say that limiting
yourself to TABS in order to play is like"Painting By The Numbers", you may paint the picture but you are not a painter!.
(of course some-not all- of these guitarist who look-down to
tabs are somewhat "arrogant" about their music skills- )
I guess it takes all kinds just like in other professions)!.
In essence Tabs is better than nothing but sight-reading is really a requirement if you want to widen your options!.

As for the guitar tuner, I have one that tunes both the regular guitar and the Bass Guitar!. It has the 6 notes for the strings
of the guitar with the # of the strings as follows:
1:E 2:B 3:G 4:D 5:A: 6:E
Terms such as "Drop D" means that the 6th string with is the
low E on the guitar should be tunned "down" (lower than the
note E) to the D Note!.

I hope this help!. Enjoy your guitar music!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Learn to read tabs!. Understand which notes correspond to which frets!. Learn to read music!. Learn scales and fundamental chords!. Get a fake book of your favorite songs and learn the chords (rhythm) as well as how to read and pick out the notes (melody)!.

Regarding tuners: Your top string is E!. You can lower it a whole note to D (drop D)!. Don't go there until you understand how the guitar works!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
