I worked as a jazz guitar player for many years!.

I recommend creating diversity in the repertoire, don't play tunes that are all similar in feel or in the same key!.

If you don't know what the tunes sound like, try this:

Have a look for some recordings of standards, preferably with vocals, when you play the melody you'll have an understanding of what feeling needs to be created and not just blowing notes because the dots say say what to play!.

I'd choose a few ballads, some latin e!.g Jobim stuff, some jazz/ blues, reasonably simple familiar stuff that is a good foundation for improvising around!. Look for some 'up' tunes, a night full of ballads is beautiful but boring!.

Knowing what the tunes sound like and what the tunes are about is I think a great place to start!.

Playing the Real Book stuff is a great place to start but learn the tunes and close the book as soon as possible, this way you'll be able to concentrate on tone and emotion!.

When I was younger studied with Ike Isaacs one of Stephane Grapelli's guitarists, I'd been playing for 20 years and he'd take the simplest of songs and say 'what are you going to do with it'!.

Don't forget a bit of humour in the music every now and then!.
