Just to add a bit:

Take the G chord you are talking about, when the root of the chord, the G, is the lowest note, we say the chord is in root position, just like below!.

D
B
G!.!.!.!.!.If you take the G and move it up one octave, like this,

G
D
B!.!.!.!.!.it's still a G chord but, it's been inverted!. We call this a 1st inversion!. This is what G/B means!. If the B is also moved up an octave, like this,

B
G
D!.!.!.!.!.That's right! Now your catching on!. It's a 2nd inversion!. This is what G/D means!.

A seventh chord can have a 3rd inversion because it has a fourth note!.

What is their purpose!? On a guitar, because of the position of the notes and you only having four fingers you can fret with, it is sometimes necessary to invert a chord to be able to play it!.

How do they sound!? You'll just have to give it a try!. You can do it on a keyboard if you have one!.

One more thing, even if the position of the notes are all mixed up like this,

D
G
B!.!.!.!.!.it's still considered a G chord!.

The best way to learn about chords is to learn about intervals first!. It will clear up a whole lot of confusion!.

Best Wishes

G/B means you play a G triad (G, B, D) with a B as the bass note!.

A/C means you play an A triad (A, C#, E) with a C in the bass!. This one would sound not so great as the C# is the maj 3rd of the chord and then you have a min3 as the bass note!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
