The first instance of both the "Trompettes a pistons" and the "Cors a pistons" occurred in 1835 in La Juive (Halevy)!. This might not have been right after the innovation of adding pistons (valves) to the instruments, but it couldn't have been TOO long after!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think it was mid 19th!. I seem to recall from a paper I wrote in college that Verdi used valveless horns as late as Don Carlos, which was premiered in 1867!.
