You're planning on taking up the most popular instrument in the world!? Well, be prepared for a bit of a coordination challenge, an investment in time and patience, and some sore fingertips for a few weeks!.!.!. But, suffering aside, keep in mind why you started : the innate, human need to ROCK!.

Things You’ll Need:

* a guitar
* a little patience
* a little time
* a reason to play

Be realistic, and get focused!. There are a lot of guitars gathering dust in attics across the country, because their owners weren't sure what they wanted to accomplish!. Why did you pick up a guitar!? A desire to express yourself, perhaps!? Or just to impress the guys/gals!?

If you just feel the need to sing a few songs you know from the radio, you can be on your way with a handful of chords!. If you're looking for expression and fulfillment, you may very well find it - but expect to put in a leeetle more time ;-)

copyright joe dochtermann - www!.joedocmusic!.com Let's take a look at two things here - two basic chords which will be your companions throughout your musical journey!. The A minor chord, and the C major chord!.

Here's an A minor!.
-------------------------
The above picture is what is often called a 'chord diagram'!. What it is is a birds-eye view of the guitar, showing where your fingers are placed to form the chord!. The black dots are the 'root note' - in this case an 'A'!.

Notice the double line at the top of the image - that represents the 'nut', the small piece of wood, plastic, or metal over which the strings lay on their way to the tuning pegs!. So, to understand the diagram, imagine that you're looking at the guitar the way it stands when you look at it in the music store! There are, of course, six strings, and the horizontal lines represent the frets!.

So, you'll need to assign a finger to each string where there's a dot!. In this case - from left to right - place your MIDDLE FINGER on the D-string, your RING FINGER on the next string (G-string) and use your INDEX FINGER to press down on the 1st fret of the B-string!.

Be sure that you are pressing down on the strings JUST BEHIND the fret!. This assures that you only need a minimum of pressure!. also be sure that you're not touching other strings with that finger, as it will cause them to sound dampened!.

Now, strum the strings downward, starting at the A-string!. CONGRATS! You've played your first chord!.

c joedoc Now, hold onto that A minor chord! We're going to play another chord, and it has a lot to do with the A minor!. Here's the image to the left!.

For this chord - a C major chord - simply strrrrreeeetch that ring finger down to the 3rd fret of the A-string!. Be sure you're pressing down with your fingertips, not the pads of the fingers!.

Strum those strings from the A-string downward again!. Sound O!.K!.!? If so, then you're WAY ahead of the game!. A C chord in this form is rather difficult to get sounding clear as a beginner!.

I'm about out of space here, but contact me either thru eHow or at my site www!.joedocmusic!.com - playing the guitar is a passion, and getting the first steps right will make everything easier down the line!. For those starting off, I'd recommend my "Ultimate Chord Guide" at the site, which has loads more info just like this!.

Tips & Warnings
------------------------
* Keep at it! The first attempts always sound like hell!. You WILL improve!. I've had students from age 5 to age 65, and all have done well and learned to play, so you will too!.

* Drop me a line at my website www!.joedocmusic!.com via the contact link!. some days are real quiet and I'm working on my own playing, and I may have time for a quick online lesson!.

* BREATH! If some aspect of playing is causing difficulties, don't tense up!. It is as simple and as difficult as getting your fingers to do what the brain wants them to, and for that you need to relax and let it flow!. Frustration doesn't fit well with learning music!.!.
