What is a folk or art song?

Question: What is a folk or art song!?

My University requires auditions for musical ensembles and this is what they say for vocalists: vocalists should try to bring a prepared folk or art song if possible!. I've been in multiple choruses all my life but I am not exactly sure if I have been singing what would be called folk or art songs!.!.!. Can anybody tell me what kind of songs fit these categories or give me any insight on the type of music they are looking for!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Folk can either mean old traditional songs like "John Henry" or when "Johnny Comes Marching Home," or more modern songs by singer-songwriters, often with traditional instruments like acoustic guitars or banjoes!.
