I've had this problem because I have short arms and I like to play a longer necked bass!.

try this:

Adjust your strap so that the bass is more in an upright position!. (A shorter distance from your shoulder to the neck)!.!.!.

From this more upright position you'll have to change the attack angle of both your hands, but you may find that your left hand actually likes coming in more perpendicular to the neck!.

This is more true to the position an upright bass player has, and if you practice this I believe you will find your left hand notes will be cleaner, and it will force greater attack concentration from your picking hand!.

I made this adjustment and it took about two days to get used to it!.

Then my playing got noticeably better!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Simple!.!.!.!. your right arm (above the rest) should rest on the body and the picking hand should be parallel to the strings!.
With this method, the weight of the arm alone will counter balance and permit you to have more control with the fingering hand!.
I noticed my pupils had this bad habit of standing awkward or what not!.
The left hand should be held by the thumb only slightly and should move freely un and down the fingerboard and MUST NOT BE USED TO SUPPORT THE NECK!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
