Question: Piano fingers Question!.!.!.!?
My daughter (4 years old) has just started taking lessons from a great piano teacher!. I do have a question about one of the technique the teacher has my daughter using!. She is having her drop each of her fingers on the piano from about 5 inches above the key while she plays!. My daughter is having a hard time coordinating this while looking at the music (she looks more at her fingers to help with her aim)!. She does curve her fingers well for the most part, but I'm just wondering what the big drops help with (I'm assuming this is a practice technique and not a way to always perform)!. Any input would be greatly appreciated!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Teaching a child to drop into a key is good sound teaching!. Your daughter is learning good tone at the piano!. Dropping into a piano key requires a relaxed arm and firm fingertips!. It is an antidote to flat-fingered playing which is common in little children just starting piano!.

Later, one wants to listen for a musical performance, shaping of phrases and musical expression, not just merely getting the right notes, fingers or time!.

If you have questions or wonder at the teacher's instruction, you should phone the teacher and ask your questions!. Any teacher would be happy to tell you his or her rationale behind the training!. If they are unable to do so, find another teacher!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

i've played piano since i was four, the big drops will come handy later when she has to move her fingers around the piano later for harder music pieces!. also when she's older she will be able to know where the right keys are without looking and possibly be able to play without any music sheets!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, I've been playing for 10 years, my teacher never made me do that, and she was amazing!.!.!. Hmm!. I don't think that's normal!. Maybe it's just to help with the coordination, but I don't know!. As for the looking at the hand thing, she'll won't have to after a while, the keys will become familiar EVENTUALLY!. Don't expect any miracles for a few years!. =]Www@QuestionHome@Com
