Question: Guitar Class Reading Basic Notes HELP!.!?
Our music teacher is really mean and I really suck at playing the guitar and I have to practice or else he will yell his head off!.

First I know the whole Every Good Boy Deserves Fuge thing and FACE but like when it'a on a certain line or inbetween a certain line how do you know what fret it is !? And our teacher keeps going E F G SWITCH B C D and I have no idea what the heck he is saying ( and my class too) and if we play wrong he yells!.
So basically my question is if a note is on a certain line how do you know its 1st fret 2nd string or whatever!? Like how do you tell!?

Sounds like your guitar teacher has a pick stick up his!.!.!.

Anyways, the biggest hurdle in to learning to read music on the guitar is knowing that standard notation is NOT tablature!. So without learning the actual notes, you can not tell which fret a note is on by what line it's on!.

My advice is to learn your open string notes: high 'e' is the top space, 'b' is the middle line etc!. Then learn the notes on the strings themselves, up to the 3rd fret should be fine!.

Once you've done that you can start working on the fretted notes!. Here's how it works, if the note head is in the top space, you play the high 'e' string open!. If the note head moves up to the line, you move up to the next note ('f' - 1st string, 1st fret)!. And if the note head moves up to the next space on top of the staff, you play the 'g' (1st string, 3rd fret)!.

Basically, you need to learn the notes on the staff and the corresponding string/fret!. When you look at the notes on the staff, try to create a mental picture of which string/fret that note is on!. Do it string by string, sticking with just the first 2 or 3 strings until they becomes familiar!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

First of all you have to learn how to read music!.!.!. it's JUST THAT SIMPLE!.!.!. once you can read music, then you will know when you see, let's say, a Middle C that it is on the A string, third fret and when you see the C one octive above, then you know it's on the B string, first Fret!.!.!. but until you learn how to read music!.!.!. you won't be able to figure it out!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Learn your fret board!.!.!.here is a short version!.!.!. the low e string (the top one) sounds an E when played!. Then it progresses in this order!.!.!.1st fret-F, 2nd fret- F#/Gb, 3rd-G,4th-G#/Ab, 5th-A!.!.!.!.
The same goes for every string!.!.!.the open string is the same note as the string you are playing and from there they progress in the same order each time but starting with your open note, for example!.!.!.that low E from the first example, will progress all the way down the string in this order!.!.!.Open-E,F,F#/Gb, G, G#/Ab, A, A#/Bb, B, C, C#/ Db, D, D#/Eb, E, !.!.!.!.!.This last E will be your 12th fret but and starts the same order over, but one octave higher!. Get yourself a good fret board diagram and keep writing it out, and playing over and over!. Email if you want, and I can explain it a little better and point you towards some pretty decent programs that make you learn it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
