There is a similar question around here that goes into more detail. I stress learning on a classical guitar because of the ease of playing and the tone produced. You learn to play better not counting on an amp to produce the sounds and you can lug the thing around and play anywhere anytime (almost). Learning to play acoustic guitar is a tremendous help in playing elecric but learning to play electric is of little use for acoustic.
I think you're thinking of string-bending on electric when you say "slip". The strings are thinner than on a steel string acoustic so stretch easier. A nylon string classical has a similar amount of stretch to the strings as electric.

I didn't notice it was the same person (you). Thanks again and I really, really recommend starting with acoustic, preferably classical. You can start w/elec. for a straight up answer, you just won't become as good IMO. Report It

  • I would not start on the electric guitar simply because playing any other guitar like the accoustic is much harder. The strings on the accoustic are harder to press down

    no hats

My daughter started on electric guitar, has added bass, acoustic guitar, jazz guitar and is now adding a celtic harp to her list of string instruments she owns and plays.....start with what interests you most....the important thing is that you bring music into your life in the way you want it!

I have known many people that started out on electric guitars, but I tell my students that learning first on an acoustic is better because it develops discipline, motivation, and challenges in progressing to the higher plateaus.
