When you sign to a Records Contract. you are basically signing a legal aggreement which says you have to pay back all the money ( AKA "Artist Advance" ) you borrowed from them to make your CD. It could be $10,000 or it could $20,000 depending on how much potential you have and and what style of music you play.

So, yes you do have to pay the Record Label back.
They take that money from your CDs, tour Merchandise, T-shirts & MP3 sales. Good luck

i'm trying to figure that out

Look at it as an advance, and YES they will take that money back out of your sales.
