IMO: Absolutely. In fact I stress learning on a classical guitar first. The nylon strings are much easier on your fingers and the tone is unbeatable. After you learn to produce good sound and have developed some techniques that are necessary on acoustic but not necessarily on electric, then go to electric. Electrics are "easier" to play (causing people to overlook some techniques) so if you have techniques that you learned on acoustic you will sound and play better on electric.
I have switched from playing acoustic (and sold a Gibson Dove which I will regret forever) to only electric, to only "heavier" electric (and sold a Rickenbacker 360c semi-hollow body electric 12 string - which I will always regret!) to both (three if you count classical as separate from flat-top). Acoustic will help you play electric enormously but electric is of little help playing acoustic.

Thanks for BA! Good luck! Report It

i don't think so, i think if you learn on electric it might even be easier to play as the action is a lot lower.

I started out playing acoustic and I feel it made me better at playing the electric because with an acoustic you have to do stuff right. When I say do stuff right I mean you have to hold the strings and pick/strum right. With an electric you don't have to be as presice. Therefore it's better to start on a acoustic in my eyes...Hope this helps! Keep Rockin!

In my opinion, even though its harder at first, learning the acoustic first is better. you know at least to play a couple of simple songs is good. Then you can go electric. Its simpler to learn the basics and it conditions your hands and fingers some so playing an electric is easier. You can do more because at first it is hard to get the chords and all and learning to read the music and such you go slower but learn more. I think that it is true because of the sounds produced by learning to use the accoustic gives you a better understanding of how the music is made. There are always exceptions. Sure the electric sounds cool when you first try it but unless you have some skills it may prove to be disappointing. You really have to want it to learn this skill! I am still working on my basics! Good luck to you !

No, not at all. If you are interested in playing the electric guitar then get straight into it and buy one.

I have met many good guitarists who learnt on the electric guitar and hardly ever touch acoustic guitars.

You can get a very good electric guitar for $300 but that won't buy you much of an acoustic guitar.
You will get better value for money by buying an electric guitar.
