Position:Home>Performing Arts> I am an average guitarist at best. Will my limited guitar ability help me learn

Question:Or if I want to learn piano will I pretty much have to start from scratch? I guess I'm asking if some knowledge of guitar will help you when attempting to learn piano.

I know I'll never be the next Oscar Levant or anything, I just wanna play the piano.

It will help with notes, chords, harmonics, keeping rythms and stuff like that. Also playing piano will increase your guitar skills a lot because you are learning to control your fingers better. I know many bassist who played piano and then tried bass and turned out to be awesome finger picking bass players.

It helped me when I jumped from guitar from piano. Then again, I was taking classical guitar (Learning music theory and such.) so I knew note names, chords, and that kind of stuff. If you were just hammering out tabs like some dreg in his bedroom in between parties, it probably won't help much.

haha this is cool. im a piano player learning how to play the guitar. so maybe i can give you help there.
well my difficulties were adjusting to the soreness of my fingers (obviously) and understanding certain concepts such as chords and strumming/picking etc. but it helped me because i knew what sound the guitar should make. i also was able to know if the guitar was tuned right or not. either way, learning both instruments help you learn more about the other if you think about it.
